Exhibition Overview
This is the first major traveling exhibition devoted to Takashi Yanase (1919–2013), the author of Anpanman. A manga artist, poet, picture book author, illustrator, designer, editor, and more, Yanase pursued an extraordinarily wide-ranging creative career, including as a master entertainer. Nothing brought him greater happiness than bringing joy to others.
His life was marked by the hardships of war, the loss of family members, and encounters with people from all walks of life, and he spent his life wondering why people are born and how they should live. Ultimately, he hit upon the idea of a hero who, no matter how uncool it may seem, gives a piece of a bread roll—an anpan—to those truly in need.
2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the Yanase Takashi Memorial Hall, and to commemorate the anniversary, the exhibition features approximately 200 original works and explores Yanase's creative world through the themes “An In-Depth Look at Takashi Yanase,” “Manga,” “Poetry,” “Picture Books / Yanase Fairy Tales,” and “Anpanman.” We invite you to experience the works that continue to inspire us to today.

Takashi Yanase
Born in Kochi Prefecture in 1919, and given the name 柳瀬 (Yanase) 嵩 (Takashi). Graduated from the Department of Craft Design at the Tokyo Higher School of Arts and Crafts (now Chiba University) before joining the Advertising Department at Tokyo Tanabe Pharmaceutical. Drafted into the military, and worked as a magazine editor for the newspaper Kochi Shimbun after returning from war. Moved to Tokyo in 1947 and worked in the Advertising Department at Mitsukoshi Department Store. Became an independent manga artist in 1953, and also worked in stage design, songwriting, and writing for radio and television. Received the Weekly Asahi Manga Award for Bo-shi in 1967. Became editor-in-chief of the magazine Shi to Meruhen (Sanrio) in 1973, when the magazine debuted. Published Anpanman in Froebel-kan's monthly picture book Kinder Ohanashi Ehon that same year. The
television anime Soreike! Anpanman premiered in 1988 and went on to become a beloved national phenomenon. His many other works include the lyrics to “Tenohira wo Taiyo ni” (1961) and the picture book Yasashii Lion (Froebel-kan, 1975). Passed away in 2013 at the age of 94.
